Governor Bradford House

The Georgian-style Governor Bradford House was built in 1745 by Isaac Royall, a wealthy and politically active colonist, whose wife, Elizabeth, inherited the Farm from her grandfather. Originally just four rooms, the home was expanded twice before the Farm was purchased by its namesake, William Bradford, the last Deputy Colonial Governor and later US Senator. It was during his ownership that President George Washington visited in 1790. The house changed hands several times before being purchased by Rudolf Haffenreffer in the early 1900s. He had his own special visitors, including Theodore Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss.

Today the house features five ensuite guest rooms, two living rooms, a dining room and full kitchen. The interior, with its glorious antiques, period wallpapers and comfortable appointments, looks out over a sun-drenched patio, tiered flower gardens and our South Pasture.
